702 Wing Lethbridge RCAF Association

History

702 Wing was inaugurated in 1949 as one of the founding components of the Royal Canadian Air force Association. The three fold obligations of the Association are; advocate for a strong and viable national air force, promote the development of aviation in Canada and promote the development of Canada’s youth principally through the Air Cadet programme.

In support of these objectives the Wing has developed an active social programme which provides the basis for fund raising and social interaction with Wing members and leading elements of our community. We welcome everyone from all walks of life. Prior military service is not a prerequisite for membership, only an interest in aviation and a desire to foster the development of our youth in an enjoyable atmosphere of comradery.

Facility

The 702 Wing quarters are located at 174 Stubb Ross Road at the Lethbridge County Airport. The building was originally a service women’s dry canteen built in 1941 as part of the Number 8, Bombing and Gunnery school under the British Commonwealth Air Training Programme. The building has undergone many upgrades since that time and remains an excellent facility for the Wing’s programmes as well as private and public functions.

429 Squadron and
the City of Lethbridge

702 Wing played a leading role in renewing the relationship between 429 Squadron and the City of Lethbridge by arranging the annual visits of the squadron.

The City of Lethbridge adopted 429 (B) Squadron in 1944 during WWII. That relationship became dormant until 2008 when the RCAF received the first of five C17 Globe master transport aircraft. In November of 2008, the City of Lethbridge granted 429 Squadron “Freedom of the Skies” over Lethbridge when the Squadron performed a fly past over the cenotaph to mark Remembrance Day. This flypast has been performed every year since except in 2013 and 2014 when high priority international commitments took precedence.
